The Democrats attempted to add an amendment to H.R. 1 voting rights package that would lower the voting age to 16 claiming that the year 2021 has given teenagers the wisdom, knowledge and maturity to make decisions about elected officials.

However the amendment was not added successfully despite pleas from several Democratic representatives.

“A sixteen-year-old in 2021 possesses a wisdom and a maturity that comes from 2021 challenges, 2021 hardships, and 2021 threats. Now is the time for us to demonstrate the courage that matches the challenges of the modern-day sixteen- and seventeen-year-old.” – Rep. Ayanna Pressley

Along with Pressley Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., and Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill helped to reintroduce the amendment on Monday.

“Beginning at the age of 16, young people are contributing to both the labor force and their local economies by paying income taxes, and yet they are deprived of the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. In this country, we affirm that when a person walks into the voting booth and pulls that lever, there is no meritocracy or hierarchy. The booth is the equalizer.” – Rep. Ayanna Pressley

The first time Democrats attempted to add the amendment was back in March 2019 when it received only 126 votes.

Hawaii has also looked at introducing a bill that would lower the voting age to 16 as well.
