An Oklahoma City Corrections Officer was in the hospital Saturday after he was held hostage on the 10th floor of the Oklahoma County Detention Center. One of the inmates who held the officer hostage was shot and killed by Oklahoma City Police Officers.
The extent of the officers injuries is unknown, but the officer was able to leave the jail under his own power, Jail Administrator Greg Williams told The Oklahoman. No other staff were injured in the incident.
The officer was on the tenth floor delivering medication to inmates when he was attacked, tied up, and had his keys taken away, according to local station KWTV-DT News 9.
At least one inmate took to social media via a cell phone and posted videos depicting the officer being held hostage, as well as inmates complaining about their living conditions. Complaints such as “we can’t take showers” can be heard on the recording.
Units responded to the jail from the Sheriff’s Department and Oklahoma City Police Department. They attempted to de-escalate the situation without success. At one point, officers saw an inmate holding an object against the correction officer’s neck and they shot and killed the inmate.
The jail remained on lockdown Saturday night with extra staff. Outside, a group of protestors formed and complained about jail conditions.Could not load the poll.
