Biden’s Department of Homeland Security has stopped fining illegal aliens who refuse to leave the United States, despite having previously agreed to do so.

The announcement was made on Friday by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who claimed that the policy was not effective in preventing illegal immigrants from remaining in the United States. The policy was actually stopped back on January 20, but the department had not made the announcement until today.

“There is no indication that these penalties promoted compliance with non-citizens’ departure obligations. We can enforce our immigration laws without resorting to ineffective and unnecessary punitive measures.” – DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Back in 2018 former President Trump has started implementing the policy under the authority of the Immigration and Nationality Act to fine illegal aliens who refused to leave the United States. The policy had not been enforced in over 20 years. Under the policy illegal aliens could be fined up to $500 per day with some of them accruing fines near $500,000 for violating immigration laws.

According to a news release all illegal aliens who were fined under the Trump Administration will have their debts cancelled.

“After reviewing detailed data regarding the issuance of such fines since 2018, it was clear to Secretary Mayorkas and Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tae Johnson that the fines were not effective and had not meaningfully advanced the interests of the agency. ICE intends to work with the Department of Treasury to cancel the existing debts of those who had been fined.” – News Release

Currently there are anywhere between 11 and 22 million illegal aliens residing in the United States with an annual cost of $134 billion a year to tax payers.
