A New York City driver, who is currently out on bail for allegedly committing attempted murder, ran over a NYPD officer during a traffic stop on Friday night.
Authorities say the officers noticed the suspect’s car was double parked and had tinted windows when they approached the vehicle. Takim Newson, the suspect, was inside the vehicle when officers noticed he was slurring his speech. Newsom admitted to smoking marijuana prior to the officers stopping him.
Officers deemed Newsom unfit to operate a vehicle and asked him to get out of the car. Instead of exiting the vehicle, Newsom put the car in reverse and ran over the officer.
Newsom then broke into a home in Queens threatening an elderly woman who lived there by pretending to be armed. From there he hijacked a jaguar sedan. Newsom was eventually apprehended in Long Island.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Newsom now faces charges of assault on a police officer and attempted burglary charges.
The officer who was struck by Newsom’s vehicle sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital and has been released.
