Boone, NC – on Wednesday morning while conducting a wellness check two deputies were shot. One deputy was killed and the other deputy was critically injured.
Shortly before 10 am 2 deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home to conduct a wellness check when the homeowner and his family did not show up for work and were not answering their phone. When the deputies entered the home they were both shot.

The deputies have been identified as Sgt. Chris Ward and Deputy Logan Fox. Sgt. Ward was transferred to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Rescuers were unable to get to Deputy Fox who remained trapped inside the home.
After a standoff that lasted for over 12 hours the suspect also shot his parents and eventually turned the gun on himself.

Around 1:30 am on Thursday a procession of law enforcement and EMS vehicles began for Ward as they honored the fallen officer. By Thursday morning a memorial was growing outside of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office.
