Minnesota prosecutor Pete Orput said today he will charge former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter with second-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Just yesterday Potter resigned from the police department, where she had been working for 26 years and was head of the police association. Police Chief Tim Gannon also resigned his position on Tuesday.
In the bodycam video of the shooting was released, Potter is heard yelling “I’ll Tase you! I’ll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!” while holding her firearm in her hand while officers were struggling with Wright. She fired one shot at Wright, killing him.
Ex-Chief Gannon has said he believed Potter accidentally grabbed her gun when she meant to get her Taser.
Potter’s home address was leaked online, causing authorities to fortify the residence with concrete barriers and fencing to keep the occupants secure.
