South Salt Lake, UT – Two deputies were shot in the head during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect, who was shot and killed.

Authorities say the incident occurred near the Salt Lake County Metro Jail at around 10:30AM on Sunday morning when they encountered a man near the north parking lot. As the deputies approached the man, he pulled out a handgun and shot at them. At least one deputy returned fire.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said the deputies were assigned to a  campus security team patrolling the area.

One deputy is set to be released soon and is in stable condition, while one deputy is in critical but stable condition. The suspect died as a result of his injuries.

“These types of incidents are really devastating for the department,” Rivera said. “We hope and we pray that our deputies will be OK.”

The deceased suspect is believed to be in his 30’s, but has not yet been identified.
