Today Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a $1,000 bonus to Florida first responders. This comes after nationwide calls for defunding the police over the last year. The announcement came during a press conference, where Gov. DeSantis said, “We’re not going to let local governments defund the police.”
DeSantis said his state is rewarding police and other first responders with the $1,000 one time bonuses for their outstanding work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some want to defund the police.
In Florida, we’re funding them & then some by providing all of our heroes $1,000 bonuses. This represents more than 174,000 first responders across the state!

DeSantis made the announcement while surrounded by local law enforcement officials. “I asked the legislature in this legislative session, we need to do bonuses for law enforcement,” DeSantis said. “Some wanted to defund the police, we’re funding the police, and then some.”
The one-time $1,000 payments are authorized for all first responder who continued to work through the pandemic, including police, firefighters, and EMTs.
