Acworth, GA. –  On Sunday, A Cobb County police officer was shot at point-blank range by a suspect who was later killed by police.  The officer’s body armor vest is credited for saving his life.

The suspect, 20-year-old Luis Rey Ruiz, was fatally shot Sunday night after a manhunt.

Police say the incident began when a Cobb County police officer responded to a domestic disturbance in Acworth in the afternoon.  When an officer arrived at the location, the suspect pulled out a gun and began firing.  The officer was shot point-blank in the chest, but was wearing a body armor vest.  The officer was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The search for the suspect has ended,” Cobb County Police said via Twitter. “A second officer involved shooting resulting in the suspect being shot and killed. No officers were injured.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has assumed the investigation.
