After a surge in violent crime in Portland, it turns out that defunding the police and painting them as racist killers wasn’t such a great idea.
“We’ve had 11 shooting incidents resulting in 13 people injured or killed and that’s in a span of 38 hours,” said Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell on Saturday.
Mayor Ted Wheeler has now decided they need more police to solve this problem. You may remember Wheeler for failing to allow his police to stop ANTIFA rioting that went on for hundreds of nights and for fighting with the Trump administration over the placement of federal police officers to quell the violence.
In June of 2020, Wheeler announced his plan for a $12 million ‘diversion’ (defunding) of the police bureau budget to be sent to directly support communities of color, defund three police units including the gun violence reduction team and ban officers from using chokeholds as part of plans to reform the Portland Police Bureau.
On June 17, 2020, the Portland City Council passed the 2020-21 budget. Included in the budget were plans to cut at least $15 million from the police bureau, eliminating 84 positions.
Homicides in Portland increased from 28 in 2019 to 54 in 2020. In 2021, Portland has already had 51 homicides.
Now, Mayor Wheeler has changed his tune and said it was clear police did not have enough resources and vowed to fight for more officers. “It is obvious from where I sit that we do not have adequate resources deployed on our streets in a proactive way,” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler.
“And so I will fight for additional resources for the police bureau, I will fight for more police officers and I will fight for more tools and whatever support the police bureau needs to get its job done,” said Wheeler.
