Agents heard the gunfire while they were moving towards their vehicles and immediately told the immigrants to take cover behind the bushes. The agents also sought shelter from the gunfire. Marine Air Operations and the tactical unit (BORTAC) immediately responded to the situation, but were unable to locate the individuals who were firing upon the Border Patrol Agents.

The International Liaison Unit requested assistance from Mexico Authorities who responded to the area, but they were unable to locate the individuals according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. Residents in the area reported seeing men flee in a pickup truck and a motorcycle but no other information was given.

“Border violence is a serious threat to public safety, and to border agents responsible for national security. This incident is another example of the dangers our officers face every day. We are taking this event very seriously.” – San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Aaron Heitke

The incident is currently under investigation and patrolling in the area has increased. The incident occurred three days after a shooting was reported by Border Patrol Agents in El Paso Texas. Illegal crossing into the United States has reached the highest it’s been in 21 years with 213,000 migrants stopped in July. That number is close to three times as many found between the ports of entry at the southern border when Biden took office in January.
