Oakland, CA – Due to the recent surge amid already high crime rates in Oakland, business leaders from Chinatown came together Tuesday to request that Governor Gavin Newsom get involved in finding a solution.
Speaking to local reporters, Carl Chan, president of the Oakland Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said, “Governor Newsom, we want you to do this: Declare a state of emergency for the city of Oakland.

“We want you to bring in the California Highway Patrol. I’m not only asking you to patrol Chinatown – all areas. We need your help.”Could not load the poll.
The “Blue Angels” were also present to stand behind Chan in his request. The citizen group wears blue vests and patrol violent areas in response to the rising street assaults and crime.
Newsom, currently facing a recall, has not responded to this request.
Chan continued, “The rash of shootings, carjacking, assaults and robberies hold the city of Oakland hostage. Citizens are living in the continuous state of fear for our safety, well being, livelihoods and future.”
Like many others, Chan said that be believes that the spike in the already high crime rate is due in part to the “defund the police” movement and also to the justice system not being strict enough, specifically on repeat offenders.
Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong spoke with reporters Tuesday, saying that his department is being stretched to thin. “Well,” The Chief said, “I think they’re right in the sense that this department needs more resources and more help.
“So, as the chief, we will continue to deploy every resource that we have available. We will continue to move resources around in order to address the spikes in crime. But we are facing challenging times in the city of Oakland.”
Oakland City Councilmember Loren Taylor said the departments resources are depleted as well: “I also hear the voices of deep East Oakland residents when they tell me that the long response time for 911 is not acceptable; that it doesn’t give them confidence that the system — the government — will look out for them and protect them in their time of need.”
The ATF and the FBI have already been assisting Oakland Police with closing cases.
