There is no denying that the withdrawal from Afghanistan was a complete disaster. Following a war that lasted over two decades, it finally came to an end with a suicide bombing that killed over a dozen service members. There were still glimmers of hope through all the pain and tears, videos of humans fighting for good among being abandoned by the Biden administration. One video, in particular, showed a U.S. Marine pulling a helpless child over a barricade as dozens of people scrambled for the border. Quickly going viral, the Marine in question was honored recently when former President Donald Trump called him on stage to congratulate him. But while he is a hero, apparently, his command has opened an investigation into the matter.

Although there is an ongoing investigation regarding the Marine, Lcpl Hunter Clark, attending the rally on September 25, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit wouldn’t explain why he was being investigated. Captain Kelton J. Cochran only said, “The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) has initiated a command investigation regarding LCpl Hunter Clark’s attendance at the event last weekend to determine if any DoD policies were violated. Any details pertaining to this incident are not releasable while the investigation is being conducted.”
While they might not want to speak on the matter, it should be noted that the Department of Defense does not allow active-duty members to “speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.”
The investigation into Lcpl Clark has no grounds given that he was attending the rally in normal clothing and was not advocating for any certain politician or party. It was actually Trump who pointed out that Clark was in attendance in the first place.
During the rally, Trump said, “We’re also honored to be joined by one of the Marines who bravely served in Kabul during the withdrawal and helped evacuate children over the airport and over the airport wall. You saw him. He did a great job, Lance Cpl. Hunter Ian Clark. Lance corporal, get up here!”
Clark did take Trump up on his offer, join him on stage, but according to local outlets, the Marine said nothing more than, “I am the guy who pulled the baby over the wall, and it’s definitely probably one of the greatest things I’ve ever done in my entire life. All the support from y’all, it really means a lot, and I’m glad to be home now today. Thank you.”

The Department of Defense should leave this Marine alone. He was in his home town attending a political rally as a private citizen in civilian clothes. In Afghanistan, he was serving his country honorably while putting his life on the line so others could enjoy the blessings of liberty. If there needs to be investigations, start at the top.
