A Texas hospital faces the possibility of closing after Joe Biden announced that most healthcare workers must get the Covid-19 vaccine.

Jerry Jasper, CEO of Brownfield Regional Medical Center, stated that if the mandate goes through, “20 percent of my, probably 20 to 25 percent of my staff will have to go away if that’s the case.” By losing that amount of staff, it would force the hospital to shut down. He also said that losing Medicare and Medicaid money is not an option either.

The White House is mandating that any healthcare facility that receives Medicare and Medicaid funding must mandate that their employees receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

“It’s huge in our rural community as all the other rural communities. We all have high poverty levels and stuff like that, so a lot of Medicaid usage in our communities and stuff like that,” – Jerry Jasper.

Another local hospital also stated that the mandate could be devastating for them. Larry Gray, CEO of Seminole Hospital District, feels strongly that mandates don’t work.

“Well, it would be devastating for the community, frankly. We have a large percentage of our revenue that comes from Medicare, Medicaid, and those kinds of products. I think the mandate is just a terrible message because if the vaccinations are working, why do you have to mandate people to get the vaccines? What happens to individual choice and medical decisions between the patient and their doctor, which is all of the things that we’re trying to support.” – Larry Gray

Biden is also mandating that any company with 100 or more employees must mandate that they get the vaccine or submit to weekly Covid test. Federal workers and contractors are also mandated to get the vaccine.

The mandate for healthcare workers to get the vaccine is impacting hospitals across the country as many healthcare workers push back on the mandate. A hospital in upstate New York was forced to close its maternity unit after 6 nurses quit over the vaccine mandate imposed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Lewis County Health System Chief Executive Officer Gerald Cayer stated that the six employees who worked on the unit resigned over the mandate.
