President Joe Biden has somehow had a long and eventual time in politics. President Biden has had more than one occasion to rub shoulders with prominent Democrats and Republicans throughout his career. On Friday, the President got the chance to speak about one of his colleagues and friends, Senator Chris Dodd, the Democrat for Connecticut. And although Dodd was investigated for allegedly assaulting a waitress in 1985, on Friday, President Biden said the senator always treated waitstaff with respect.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony of the Dodd Center for Human Rights, which is located at the University of Connecticut, President Biden gave an above-normal speech about the senator. Serving the state for 30 years, Biden claimed “he saw up close” how Dodd would “fight for human rights and human dignity in the Senate.”

“People who tell me they care about people and then disrespect the waitress or a waiter. People who tell me they care about how, in fact, people are entitled to be treated with dignity and walk by someone at a shoe side stand and doesn’t say hello. People who do not do just simply decent things for ordinary people. That’s the real measure,” Biden explained. “I’ve never seen Chris, figuratively speaking, walk by anybody.”

But given that Biden has proven he isn’t the best at remembering events or speeches, a GQ profile on Ted Kennedy in 1990 painted Dodd in an entirely different light. According to the article, a drunken Dodd sexually assaulted Carla Gaviglio, a waitress at the La Brasserie restaurant.

“As Gaviglio enters the room, the six-foot-two, 225-plus-pound Kennedy grabs the five-foot-three, 103-pound waitress and throws her on the table. She lands on her back, scattering crystal, plates, and cutlery, and the lit candles. Several glasses and a crystal candlestick are broken.”

The piece doesn’t end there as it adds, “Kennedy then picks her up from the table and throws her on Dodd, who is sprawled in a chair. With Gaviglio on Dodd’s lap, Kennedy jumps on top and begins rubbing his genital area against hers, supporting his weight on the arms of the chair.”

With such a striking picture, President Biden’s comments come off as a man who is not entirely sure of the people he aligns himself with.
