In a move that is likely unsurprising to many regarding the push for Covid vaccines, the FDA opted to recommend children ages 5-11 receive the Pfizer vaccine via emergency use authorization.

The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee panel that voted in favor of having children vaccinated was reportedly posed with the following question:

“Based on the totality of scientific evidence available, do the benefits of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine when administered as a 2-dose series outweigh its risks for use in children 5-11 years of age?”

The FDA panel voted 17-0 in favor of the benefits outweighing the risks, with one doctor reportedly abstaining. As such, this vote from the panel has cleared the path for the Pfizer vaccine to attain full authorization for children in the listed age group later in October.

Reportedly the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is slated to consider the vaccines as early as next week. In the event that the CDC grants approval, then agency director Dr. Rochelle Walensky would have to personally sign off on the matter so as to gear up availability for the vaccine for the demographic.

If all goes swiftly, the Pfizer vaccine could be available for children as early as the second week of November, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci [7]:

“So if all goes well, and we get the regulatory approval, and the recommendations from the CDC, it’s entirely possible, if not, very likely that vaccines will be available for children from 5 to 11 within the first week or two of November.”

Furthermore, the Biden administration mentioned [8] on October 20th that in the event the Pfizer vaccine attained emergency use authorization, then shipments of 15 million doses of the vaccine would be distributed to clinics around the country.

The Pfizer vaccine had already received full FDA authorization for individuals ages 16 and up, having also received a previous emergency use authorization for kids aged 12-15.

Moderna is reportedly also following in the same footsteps as Pfizer [7], having recently released data that suggests their version of the vaccine is safe for children ages 6-11.
