A leftwing group funded by the liberal billionaire George Soros has spent $500,000 on a campaign to fight reinstating police units in Austin, Texas that were defunded last year amidst the defunding police movement.

The group Save Austin Now is backing Proposition A, which would require at least two Austin police officers for every 1,000 residents. The proposition, which is an Austin ballot proposal for the Nov. 2 election, would also give cops an additional 40 hours of police training each year on topics such as weapons proficiency and active shooter scenarios.

Fox News has obtained financial records showing that Soros’ Open Society Policy Center donated $500,000 last week to Equity Austin, working to defeat Proposition A.

“It sickens me that out-of-town billionaires are able to swoop into Austin to fight against citizen-led ballot initiatives,” Austin City Council member Mackenzie Kelly said in response to this development. “The purpose of our city’s charter is to allow regular, everyday people to fight for what they believe in when the city council fails them.”

Save Austin Now cofounders Matt Mackowiak and Cleo Petricek are already trying to use the Soros funding news to fundraise.

“Massive out-of-state funding for our opponents show two things: That Austin donors won’t fund the anti-Prop A campaign and that the stakes in this effort to restore public safety to Austin could not be higher,” they said in a statement. “We are now going to fight twice as hard, and we hope all our supporters will as well.”

Last year, the Austin City Council voted to cut up to $150 million from its police department budget in the wake of the George Floyd riots. Since then, the murder rate has skyrocketed in the city, with Austin having the most homicides in over sixty years already in 2021.

“A lot of what we’re seeing happening starting today is coming home to roost from that decision,” Kelly recently told Fox News of the decision to defund the police. “And it’s disastrous.”

The Austin Police Department has had such bad staff shortages that residents are being told to call 311 instead of 911 for non-emergencies because officers will no longer be responding to those kinds of calls. Instead, social workers will be sent in their place.

Soros has long been trying to destroy America from the inside, so it comes as no surprise that he is going all-out to defund police, as he knows that doing so will cause as much chaos in this country as possible.
