Halloween CANCELED By Seattle School Over ‘Equity’ Because Black Kids Apparently Don’t Celebrate

An elementary school in Seattle, Washington has canceled Halloween over some “woke” fears about student equity and inclusion.

My Northwest [1] reported that Seattle Public School baselessly claimed that Black males do not celebrate the holiday and that students of color typically feel marginalized by Halloween. One parent fired back by claiming that this is an “exercise in affluent white vanity that is wokeism.”

Benjamin Franklin Day Elementary (B.F. Day) has hosted a Halloween celebration annually for years, with festivities that include a “Pumpkin Parade,” where students can wear costumes if they choose to do so. This year, however, the administration decided that they will be canceling Halloween to focus on the “foundational beliefs around equity for our students and families.”

“As a school with foundational beliefs around equity for our students and families, we are moving away from our traditional ‘Pumpkin Parade’ event and requesting that students do not come to school in costumes,” the school said in a letter to parents last week.

The administration went on to say that this move is meant to show respect for students, even though it is sure to bitterly disappoint them.

“Halloween events create a situation where some students must be excluded for their beliefs, financial status, or life experience,” school officials said. “Costume parties often become an uncomfortable event for many children, and they distract students and staff from learning. Large events create changes in schedules with loud noise levels and crowds. Some students experience overstimulation, while others must deal with complex feelings of exclusion. It’s uncomfortable and upsetting for kids.”

Instead of getting to celebrate Halloween, students will take part in events like “thematic units of study about the fall.” They will also get to review “autumnal artwork” while “sharing all the cozy feelings of the season.”

No, we’re not joking. This is all stated in the very same newsletter that cancels Halloween.

David Malkin, who is the father of a 7-year-old student at the school, said that this is yet another “exercise in affluent white vanity that is wokeism.”

“I don’t see any way in which this actually addresses any inequities to the extent that there are any inequities,” said Malkin, who is Asian. “You know, this just seems like grandstanding on behalf of the principal and the staff who are predominantly white.”

Malkin went on to say that parents were not involved in this decision by the school.

“I’m sure they don’t want to hear from anyone of any race or ethnicity that doesn’t really want to go along with them in lockstep,” he continued.

School officials, however, have stood by the decision.

“Historically, the Pumpkin Parade marginalizes students of color who do not celebrate the holiday,” a school spokesperson claimed. “Specifically, these students have requested to be isolated on campus while the event took place. In alliance with SPS’s unwavering commitment to students of color, specifically African American males, the staff is committed to supplanting the Pumpkin Parade with more inclusive and educational opportunities during the school day.”
