A National Pulse investigation recently revealed that both Pfizer and Moderna have both dramatically increased their lobby budget this year from 2019.

Pfizer and Moderna, two of the companies whose COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the FDA, both employed several big names in the political realm, many with ties to the White House in previous and current administrations.

Sudafi Henry is formerly then-Vice President Joe Biden’s legislative affairs director. Now he’s a lobbyist for Pfizer. Among other Democrats added to the list, according to Politico, are “Eriade Williams, a deputy chief of staff to former Rep. Robert Brady (D-Pa.); and Kwabena Nsiah, a former staffer for now-HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and top aide to now-White House aide Cedric Richmond, will all lobby on general health care and manufacturing issues for the drugmaker.”

According to the National Pulse, some Republicans have joined the ranks of Big Pharma lobbiests. “Justin McCarthy,” the outlet reported, “who served under George W. Bush as a Special Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs, and Ben Howard, who served as a Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs under Donald Trump, both lobby for the pharmaceutical giant [Pfizer].

“David Schiappa, a longtime Republican staff member of the Senate holding the role of Secretary for Leader Mitch McConnell, is also lobbying for Pfizer.”

The National Pulse investigation also revealed that Pfizer increased lobbying spending from $11,000,000 in 2019 to $13,150,000. This represents the highest spending by Pfizer since 2010. Additionally, the company jumped from 77 lobbyists in 2019 to 102 in 20202, and this year have claimed 92.

Likewise, Moderna’s lobby spending represents a 600% increase this year over 2019. In 2019, they had just one lobbyist and spent $40,000 on lobbying. In 2020, they had two and spent $280,000, and halfway into 2021, they have claimed 14 lobbyists and spent $299,000.
