LUBBOCK, TX – Video has surfaced of a November 5th fatal shooting of a 54-year-old man who was reportedly having a heated encounter with the mother of his child over custodial issues, who was later shot and killed by a man identified as the significant other of the woman involved in the custodial argument with the decedent.
On November 5th, 54-year-old Chad Read went to the residence of Christina Read, the mother of the decedent’s children, located within the 2100 block of 90th Street. Video captured a portion of a heated dispute between Chad and Christina. Chad could be heard complaining about his child not being at the residence at a purportedly prearranged time.
“I don’t care if you wanted to see him or not…I get him at 3:15 p.m. If you want to see him, you see him up until 3:15. You keep trying to keep my son from me.”

After Chad threatened to have subpoenas issued against his former spouse and others in the household, a man identified as William “Kyle” Carruth emerged from the home armed with a rifle and tells Chad to leave the premises.
The firearm’s presence dramatically escalates the confrontation, as Chad immediately gets face-to-face with Carruth and begins daring him to use the weapon. While the two were bumping chests, Carruth appears to fire at least one round on the ground.
After the shot is fired, Chad can be seen grabbing the barrel of the firearm and, during a struggle over the weapon, swings Carruth around with enough force to throw him off the front porch where the two were face-to-face earlier.
Carruth can be seen on camera raising the rifle and shooting Chad twice within mere moments of said swinging. Jennifer Read, Chad’s spouse who recorded the encounter from outside the house, begins clamoring for someone to “call 911.”

Carruth then turns his attention to Jennifer, saying, “None of you all should be here. I asked you to leave. I did everything…I did not want to do any of this.”

As of November 25th, no formal charges have been brought forth in the matter. An attorney representing Carruth, David M. Guinn with Hurley, Guinn & Singh, says Carruth acted in self-defense during the shooting.
“All Texans may lawfully brandish a firearm to protect themselves, their property, and their business. When Kyle did that, Chad Read advanced on him…And instantaneously, he tried to take the gun away from Kyle. In doing so, he was powerful enough to sling Kyle 180 degrees around on Kyle’s patio.
Raising his left leg, he continued his advance on Kyle, threatening him and posing an immediate threat. Kyle responded. This is a justifiable homicide.”
Guinn added that these details are the reason why the Lubbock Police Department has yet to arrest his client.
“It is my opinion, because of their knowledge of all the facts and the Texas Castle Doctrine and having done a thorough job, LPD knew this was a justifiable homicide. They knew they lacked probable cause and did not arrest him.”
The case was handed over to the Texas Attorney General for further review, which the incident is still under review by authorities.

That does not look justified to me. There were no blows. The gun grabbing was before and then there was a break and a pause. There was no punches thrown or other weapons. 2 shots centre mass at distance. Go to jail IMHO 10-20yrs. You can’t shoot people your wife has a disagreement with outside your house. He breaks in to your house or is causing harm and damage? well I guess that’s different. Fire warning shot. Did the right things mostly?
He was looking for his son and it was clear his son was not there.
He was trespassing and was stupid trying to grab a gun out of a mans hands on that mans property.
Its like Rittenhouse. Dont try and disarm a man with a gun with ill intent. Because what was the fathers intent once he had the gun???? Silly man.
Not like Rittenhouse at all. The victim wasn’t armed with anything. He didn’t appear to be advancing on the shooter. This is tragic for all involved, especially the child.
Correct. BUT….this is Texas.
Plain 1e degree murder
This is murder. The man was there for his kids and never entered the residence. He should have called the cops rather than bring out a gun.
Not justified IMO, from what video shows. Go to jail, go directly to jail.
This is sad. Everyone loses their temper. But NEVER grab a gun from a man on his own property during an argument. You will end up dead. For all Kyle knew, the dad was going to take the gun and shoot him with it. But I agree that after distance was created between them, don’t shoot the guy unless he advances again. Or just shoot him in the leg that will diffuse the situation. You can’t say somebody can’t shoot a threatening trespasser just because there is distance. You have to assume his intention is to harm you if he is threatening, angry and won’t leave. If you don’t shoot, he may shoot you.
