The Qatar Stars League released an official statement regarding the matter, noting that the cause was a heart attack and that Coulibaly is currently receiving treatment.
“During the 2021-2022 season QNB Stars League match between Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah at the Al Gharafa Stadium on Saturday, Al Wakrah player Ousmane Coulibaly suffered a heart attack which required the intervention of medical and ambulance staff present at the venue. It may be noted that the player is currently receiving necessary medical care and attention.
The Qatar Stars League wishes the player a fast recovery, and we would like to thank the medical staff of both teams, paramedics and doctors for their great efforts during such events.”
Coulibaly’s heart attack comes at a time where other athletes, in particular footballers, have been either collapsing or exclaiming that they were feeling well in the midst of matches.
Back in June of 2021 , professional footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during the Denmark-Finland game while no one was around him. It was later confirmed that Eriksen had suffered a heart attack .
An October report from The Washington Post noted Eriksen was later fitted with a cardioverter-defibrillator device but was barred from playing in Italy’s Inter Milan soccer club citing an abundance of caution due to the June heart attack.
Also in October, 33-year-old Sergio Aguero – who was five games in to a 2-year contract he signed with Barcelona – was taken to a hospital with breathing problems following a match against Alaves. He was diagnosed with a heart condition and announced his retirement from the sport in early December.
“I took this decision because of problems I had a bit more than a month ago. I was in good hands with the doctors who also did their best and told me the best thing to do was stop playing… I did everything possible to keep the hope alive but there wasn’t much hope.”
