The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. at Butchertown Market on Story Avenue, where Greenburg has an office situated.

Metro Council President David James as well as Louisville Metro Police Chief Erika Shields confirmed that the suspect, who authorities have yet to identify by name, entered Greenburg’s office and began opening fire at the mayoral candidate.

James referred to the incident as being an assassination attempt.

By some miracle, Greenburg wasn’t harmed during the shooting, but officials did state that a bullet wound up hitting the mayoral candidate’s clothing.

When commenting on the incident, Chief Shields stated, “We consider ourselves very fortunate today.”

Chief Shields stated that the unnamed suspect is in custody and that investigators thus far believe the alleged shooter acted alone. There’s currently no word on what specific charges the individual may face, with Chief Shields adding no possible motive in the shooting has been determined either.

“We’re going to keep an open mind and proceed with an abundance of caution.”

Shortly after the incident, Greenburg took to Twitter [4] proclaiming that he and his staff are “all safe” and that they’re working with authorities regarding the matter.

“My team and I are fortunately all safe. We are all with LMPD now. I will provide an update as soon as possible. Thank you for the outpouring of support.”

Bill Dieruf, a Republican who is also running for mayor, issued a statement of support for Greenburg, highlighting that such incidents “cannot be condoned” nor should candidates be deterred in their efforts to behoove their community.

“Our prayers go out to Democratic mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg and his family and staff. The shooting incident at his office today cannot be condoned. Trust that an incident such as this must not deter candidates from seeking the very best for this community.”

According to reports from last September [5], violent crime rates in Louisville – much like many cities in the rest of the country – saw disturbing increases with respect to homicides.
