Teen Cousins Dead After Playing With Gun While Filming On Instagram [VIDEO]

ST. LOUIS, MO – A 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, who are reportedly cousins, died last week after the young girl accidentally shot the boy and herself while reportedly playing with a gun and streaming [1] on Instagram live.

The incident occurred on March 25th at the Cupples Station Loft Apartments located within the 1000 block of Spruce Street during the early morning hours, according to reports [2], where St. Louis Metropolitan Police responded to the apartment at approximately 2:00 a.m. to find the two young children deceased inside of the bathroom.

The children, identified as 12-year-old Paris Harvey and 14-year-old Kuaron Harvey, were reportedly attending a family gathering at the apartment, according to Paris’ mother, Shanise Harvey.

“Everybody was getting together to celebrate, and so the younger kids, they got a bed and breakfast.”

Police initially suspected [3] that the incident was a murder-suicide, but family members of the decedents countered those initial suspicions. The manner in which Shanise described the incident was more indicative of an accidental shooting.

“They were making a video, and [Paris] was playing with the gun, but it went off and hit him…[Paris] dropped the gun, and it fell, and it went off to my knowledge. And then when she picked it up, she picked it up by the barrel and it went off. That’s all I know…It was not a suicide. It was just a freak accident.”

The horrifying moments were captured live in Instagram, as well as the moments where family members inside of the apartment discovered what happened inside of the bathroom.

In the video, it appears as though the young girl is holding up the firearm (in a sort of pose for lack of a better term) to the back of the young boy’s head when it suddenly goes off. As mentioned by the young girl’s mother, she does appear to lean over to ostensibly pick up the firearm when it suddenly goes off again, striking her in the process.

Paris’ mother, who wasn’t at the apartment when the incident occurred, isn’t sure who the gun belonged to or how her daughter got ahold of it, but decried the lack of supervision taking place at the family gathering.

“With all that family there, they should have basically made sure she was OK. Everybody should have stuck with somebody.”

Authorities are still investigating the incident, and it’s unclear who – if anyone – will be facing charges in the deaths of these young children.

However, the senseless loss that occurred with the passing of these young children showcases just how important firearm safety – particularly in the realm of firearm storage – is when it comes to keeping a firearm in one’s home where children either reside or frequent.
