While Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine thanks to President Vladimir Putin, it appears famed Russian pranksters Vladimir Kuznetsov (Vovan) and Alexey Stolyarov (Lexus) have more than enough time on their hands, as they were recently able to get on a phone call with former President George W. Bush. Knowing that speaking with Russian pranksters might not grant them access to the former President, both Vovan and Lexus pretended to be Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. And what makes the entire prank astonishing is not only did they trick Bush, but they got him to admit that his father, former President George H. W. Bush, promised Russia that NATO would not expand.

Although sounding more like fiction than fact, the video, which is featured below, has Bush completely believing he is speaking with Zelensky. The start of the conversation was the normal pleasantries of politicians as Bush was all smiles, but eventually it transitioned as the Republican stated, “I wanted him on the fringe of NATO. I wanted Ukraine into NATO. I thought for a while we got Russia to be more cooperative. And then Putin changed dramatically. I think what he wanted to do was sit on the fringe of NATO and make sure NATO was not offensive, but defensive.”

Trying to push their prank further, the duo brought up his father’s promises to the Soviet Union’s former president, Mikhail Gorbachev, about not expanding NATO. “In the early 90s, Secretary of State Baker promised Gorbachev not to spread, not to expand NATO. But this would be completely wrong, especially with the threats that Russia poses now.”

Again, having no idea, Bush suggested, “Baker was, you know, he was a Secretary of State for my dad, which was years ago. And so the United States must be flexible, adjusting to the times.”

It should be noted that Bush’s comments come not long after he accidentally condemned the war in Iraq, which he declared. Speaking to a crowd in Dallas, Texas, the former President stated, “Russian elections are rigged, political opponents are imprisoned or otherwise eliminated from participating in the electoral process. The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia, and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq.”

Having a quick moment of clarity, Bush was sure to correct himself, but it was too late, as the clip of his speech was spread online swiftly as many condemned the aggression taken by the United States after the 9/11 terrorists attacks. After fixing his mishap, he reminded the audience that he was 75-years-old. While forgetting in one’s older years is common, Bush is still younger than President Joe Biden by four years.
