With abortion becoming a hot topic in America due to a leaked document showing the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, on Friday, with a vote of 6-3, Justice Samuel Alito wrote, “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” Although the ruling doesn’t ban abortion nationwide but makes it a state issue, several key Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and even former President Barack Obama, weighed in on the historic ruling.
Labeling the highest court in the United States to be the “radical Supreme Court,” as can be seen in the video below, Pelosi suggested the ruling was a “slap in the face to women” and stated, “women today have less freedom than their mothers.” That wasn’t all, as she claimed, “Today, the Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved the GOP’s dark and extreme goal of ripping away women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions.”
Continuing with her statement, Pelosi was sure to place the blame on former President Donald Trump. “Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party & their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers. Radical Republicans are now charging ahead with their crusade to criminalize health freedom.”
It wasn’t just Pelosi, as Representative Maxine Water declared, “You ain’t seen nothing yet. Women are going to control their bodies no matter how they try and stop us—the hell with the Supreme Court. We will defy them. Women will be in control of their bodies. And if they think Black women are intimidated or afraid, they got another thought coming. Black women will be out in droves. We will be out by the thousands. We will be out by the millions. We are going to make sure we fight for the right to control our own bodies.”
As mentioned above, Obama even shared his opinion, tweeting, “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”
And as always, AOC also jumped on Twitter to write, “Overturning Roe and outlawing abortions will never make them go away. It only makes them more dangerous, especially for the poor + marginalized. People will die because of this decision. And we will never stop until abortion rights are restored in the United States of America.”
Promising to continue to fight, House Speaker Pelosi concluded, “A woman’s fundamental health decisions are her own to make, in consultation with her doctor & her loved ones – not to be dictated by far-right politicians. While Republicans seek to punish & control women, Democrats will keep fighting ferociously to enshrine Roe v. Wade into law. “
