SEATTLE, WA – Darren Daniel Hunter, a Seattle Public School special education teacher, has been charged with rape in the third degree, according to a report by The Post Millennial.

Hunter, who taught at Madison Middle School and has been employed by the district for 15 years, also now has a protection order against him in connection to the incident. The rape is reportedly not connected to a minor but rather a woman that he met on a dating app in July of 2021.

The charge against Hunter stems from an incident that allegedly occurred on August 15, 2021, where the victim identified in documents as “TA” claims that Hunter raped her. TA reported the rape to the Kent Police Department on November 9 of the same year.

The school district’s Communications Specialist, Tina Riss Christiansen, said that the teacher has been placed on “administrative leave” pending investigation. His information remains on the district website, however.

“On Sunday, September 18,” Christiansen said in a statement, “Seattle Public Schools became aware that the employee had been arraigned in February on charges that stemmed from an August 2021 incident when school was not in session. The alleged incident did not involve a minor or take place on school property. The employee was immediately placed on administrative leave on Monday, Sept. 19.”

Despite the gap in time between the alleged incident and the victim reporting it to the police, investigators were able to develop probable cause against Hunter, including by statements taken from five people close to TA. Reportedly, TA had spoken to those five people about the incident, with each having “varying levels of knowledge about the particular details of the rape.”

The investigator stated in the report, “Those who were close to TA described a change in her mood after the rape, using words like ‘denial,’ ‘numbness,’ and ‘scared.'” The report also noted that after meeting via the dating app, Hunter and TA “had a couple of dates, texted back and forth, and spoke on the phone. TA characterized them as texting and talking often. Darren would call her almost every day, and they would talk for hours.”

The complaint against Hunter read, “Darren expressed an interest in sex and began pressuring TA, but she told him it was too soon and they did not know each other well enough. Darren invited her to his house, and while she was there, they started kissing and then had sex. TA liked it but also found it intense and overwhelming. Darren told her he wanted ‘us to be an us.’ Darren and TA continued to talk and text often. Darren continued to pressure her for more of a relationship while also flattering her and making her feel special.”

On the date of the alleged incident, August 15, 2021, the two “arranged for TA to come to Darren’s house…[and] they discussed sex, including having anal sex. TA told Darren she wanted to have sex with him but did not want to have anal sex. Darren pressed her on it, but TA told him, ‘No.; They each had a beer, and TA drank ‘a couple of sips.’…They started having vaginal sex, and at first, TA liked it but felt that it was intense and too rough. Darren grabbed TA by the neck and squeezed, strangling her. Darren released TA’s neck and spat violently in her face. TA described feeling shocked, stunned, humiliated, and degraded. She also described feeling overwhelmed and unable to do anything.”

Hunter confirmed that he had sex with TA but maintains that the contact was consensual. He also told the investigator that after TA said, “let’s not do this anymore,” on the night in question, they stopped. The two continued, he said, to “fool around,” and he did not remember if they had sex again after that. He was “adamant,” according to the investigator, that he “had not strangled or spit on TA, [and] they had not gone back and forth between vaginal and anal sex.”
