Before 2016, the mainstream media and big tech seemed to have a monopoly on what information was relayed to the masses. Without even knowing it, networks like CNN and MSNBC often pushed their own political narrative while criticizing the GOP. No matter the situation, it always appeared to be the fault of Republicans. That was until former President Donald Trump entered the political arena. One of the first things he did was expose the media and big tech for silencing those who might not agree with their narrative. This led to swift censorship of Trump across all platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Since then, many others have been shadow banned for their opinions. Most recently, Italian politician, Giorgia Meloni found herself to be the latest target of censorship, but YouTube said it was a simple mistake.
According to Breitbart News, “Google-owned YouTube removed the video of a 2019 speech from incoming Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni which had been going viral across numerous platforms. The internet giant claims the video “breached” its community guidelines, a transgression that apparently took several years and a successful election for it to notice. A message now appears on the YouTube video stating that it breached the platform’s community guidelines, although the platform has yet to publicly give a pretext.”
That’s right, the speech given by Giorgia Meloni that focused on family, religion, and degrading people to nothing but a number, found itself banned from YouTube. Giving a statement about the video being banned, a YouTube spokesperson explained, “Upon careful review, we determined this video is not violative of our Community Guidelines and have reinstated it. We enforce our policies regardless of the speaker’s political views, and when it’s brought to our attention that a video has been mistakenly removed, we review the content and take appropriate action, including restoring the relevant videos or channels–as we have done with this video.” After the statement, the video was restored to the site.
While addressing the situation, YouTube refrained from answering why it took so long for the company to restore the video if it was a mistake. Users online wrote, “Yes, it wasn’t a mistake in the sense that they did it unintentionally; it was a mistake in that they underestimated the reaction of the public to their obvious censorship of free speech.”
Another user suggested, “YouTube is another propaganda arm of the Democrat Party. Slavishly adhering to the far Left’s belief that all conservative thought has to be censored lest it infect the population with the ideals expressed in our founding documents.”
And one concluded, “For a company full of self-designated geniuses, they certainly make a significant number of mistakes. Really odd that all of these mistakes go only one direction.”
