Los Angeles, CA – In a swift and courageous response, Police Officer II Hugo Alfaro, Serial No. 41908, assigned to Olympic Division, successfully intervened in an officer-involved shooting to protect a potential victim. The incident, under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division, unfolded on November 29, 2023, at approximately 11:10 p.m., near the 300 block of South Kenmore Avenue.
Upon receiving a radio call reporting an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon suspect there now,” Officer Alfaro and fellow officers promptly arrived at the scene. As they approached, they witnessed 28-year-old Dominica Briones engaged in a violent confrontation with a male Hispanic individual, attempting to stab him with a knife in the middle of the roadway.
Recognizing the immediate danger to the victim’s life, the officers swiftly exited their vehicle and ordered Briones to drop the knife. Ignoring their commands, Briones continued her aggressive advance towards the victim, swinging the knife menacingly. The victim, thinking quickly on his feet, used a discarded dresser drawer as a makeshift shield to protect himself.
In a brave and selfless act, Officer Alfaro made the difficult decision to employ deadly force to neutralize the imminent threat posed by Briones. He discharged his weapon, striking her and effectively subduing the assailant. Briones was taken into custody without further incident.
Briones was subsequently transported to a local hospital by the Los Angeles Fire Department for treatment. Despite her injuries, she is now listed in stable condition. The victim, fortunately, sustained only a minor laceration to his finger and received immediate medical attention at the scene.
A thorough investigation is underway, managed by the LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division. Expert investigators have been interviewing witnesses and meticulously collecting evidence, including the recovery of a kitchen knife with a 3-inch blade from Briones’ purse.
