ST. LEON, Ind. – In a show of patriotism and determination, Cameron Blasek, a senior at East Central High School, stood his ground after being told to remove the American flag from his truck on school grounds, only to have the decision reversed the following day.

Blasek, who had been proudly displaying the flag on his truck throughout the entire school year without any issues, was called into the principal’s office last Thursday and instructed to take down the flag. He was warned that failure to comply would result in disciplinary action for insubordination.

Firm in his beliefs and armed with knowledge of the school’s guidelines and Indiana state laws, Blasek respectfully refused to remove the flag. He even cited sections from the school’s handbook.

News of Blasek’s situation quickly spread, and to his surprise, fellow students expressed their solidarity with him by displaying American flags on their own vehicles.

“I was kind of shocked,” said Blasek. “I’m like, ‘Holy cow, everybody’s got flags.’ I wasn’t expecting any of that, but I thought it was pretty cool seeing everybody come together like that.”

The controversy surrounding the flag caught the attention of Principal Tom Black, who eventually released a statement on Friday.

“After careful consideration and in recognition of the importance of the U.S. flag as a symbol of unity and national identity, I am pleased to inform you that we are allowing the display of the U.S. flag by students in the East Central High School parking lot,” the statement read.

Blasek, hopeful for the future, expressed his desire for students to be unafraid to stand up for their beliefs and appreciate the significance of freedom of speech.

“I was always taught never to back down from a situation that you believe in,” Blasek said. “That’s just the way I was raised. My family raised me that way, and I’m very grateful for it.”
