Two lives were lost during a shootout that transpired between police officers and an alleged domestic violence suspect on Saturday night in Columbus. The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. in the 4700 block of McAllister Avenue, following a response to a domestic violence call made to the Columbus police.

Brian Toth, the executive vice president for the Fraternal Order of Police, emphasized the inherent danger associated with domestic violence calls, stating, “Domestic violence is the worst kind of call a police officer is going to go on.”

Upon their arrival at the scene, the officers were met with gunfire from an individual armed with multiple weapons. Witnesses were present in the vicinity when the shooting erupted, heightening the intensity of the situation. Columbus police later confirmed that the suspect was in possession of a rifle.

In response to the immediate threat, at least one officer returned fire and successfully struck the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m. Fortunately, none of the officers involved suffered any injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

Reflecting on the harrowing events, Toth acknowledged the unpredictability of the situation, remarking, “The suspect dictated their response. When the officers pulled up, they had no idea they were going to run into a gun battle, and they did. And thankfully, they’re alive, and those innocent bystanders, thankfully, they’re alive by the grace of God as well.”

As law enforcement officials secured the scene, emergency responders were directed to a residence on the 100 block of Lockwood Road. It was there that they discovered a woman who had been shot by the suspect prior to the shootout. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:18 p.m.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect, and investigations into the incident are ongoing as they work to unravel the details surrounding this incident.
