In a heartbreaking incident at a church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska,  the Reverend Stephen Gutgsell was fatally stabbed in the church rectory, as reported by the Omaha World Herald. The tragedy took place in the St. John the Baptist parish early on Sunday morning. Reverend Gutgsell was immediately rushed to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha by ambulance but, sadly, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Omaha.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man named Kierre L. Williams, aged 43 and from Sioux City, Iowa, was taken into custody at the scene. Later, he was arrested on suspicion of homicide and the use of a weapon to commit a felony.

The Omaha archdiocese expressed its condolences and shared that they are praying for Reverend Stephen Gutgsell. The Archdiocese confirmed that the assault occurred during an invasion at the rectory and that the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the tragic incident. At this time, no further details are available. Archbishop George Lucas requests prayers for the repose of Reverend Gutgsell’s soul, his family, and the St. John the Baptist parish community.

Sheriff Mike Robinson stated that Reverend Gutgsell, aged 65, made a distress call to 911 around 5 a.m., reporting an attempted break-in at the rectory. Deputies arrived at the scene promptly but found Reverend Gutgsell suffering from stab wounds.
