Washington, D.C. – Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a prominent member of the Democrat “Squad,” is facing criticism for commemorating a convicted cop killer on a Bronx middle school’s “Wall of Honor” during his time as principal. Despite public outcry, Bowman staunchly supports this shocking decision.

The individual in question is Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur. A black militant and a fugitive on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, Shakur was convicted, along with two accomplices, for the execution-style slaying of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster in 1973. After escaping from jail, she fled to Cuba, where she remains to this day.

When questioned about honoring Chesimard during a community council meeting in Yonkers, Bowman responded defiantly, asserting that he has the right to decide how history is taught and celebrated. In a brazen move, he compared Chesimard’s inclusion on the “Wall of Honor” to the presence of slaveholder Thomas Jefferson on historical memorials.

Despite being pressed to denounce this controversial inclusion, Bowman adamantly refused, proclaiming, “I will refuse to denounce.” His dismissive attitude shows a complete disregard for the concerns of his constituents and the wider community.

Joanne Chesimard was a member of the Black Liberation Army, an extremist group known for its violent actions. On May 2, 1973, she was involved in a shooting incident on the Jersey Turnpike when the vehicle she was in was stopped for a motor vehicle violation. During the altercation, Trooper Foerster tragically lost his life, and another trooper was severely wounded.

Chesimard was wanted for several other felonies, including a bank robbery, at the time of her arrest. Following her conviction for first-degree murder, she orchestrated an audacious prison escape in 1979 from a facility in Clinton, New Jersey. Since then, she has found refuge in Cuba, where she continues to evade justice.

The FBI has labeled Chesimard as one of its most wanted fugitives and is offering a substantial reward of $1 million for information leading to her capture and return to the United States. Despite this, she remains a free woman, shielded by a regime that harbors criminals.

While Rep. Bowman defends his decision to honor an unrepentant cop killer, concerned citizens are expressing outrage. Financial strategic adviser Dolan, for instance, condemned Bowman’s justification for “using taxpayer dollars to teach our kids to glorify a cop killer.” The incumbent congressman’s actions are seen as a betrayal of the principles and values that should guide public education.

Moreover, Bowman faces not only fierce opposition from Dolan but also a primary challenge from Westchester County Executive George Latimer. Latimer, supported by Jewish activists including the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, denounces Bowman’s anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian positions.

Joanne Chesimard is not the only controversial figure to be featured on Bowman’s schools’ Hall of Honor. The late Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of rapper Tupac Shakur, who had a lengthy criminal record for armed robberies, and former Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), an ardent promoter of antisemitic conspiracy theories, were also celebrated on the wall. These choices reflect poorly on Bowman’s judgment and further exacerbate concerns about his priorities.

The Wall of Honor controversy is just the latest issue to plague Bowman’s tenure. He has previously come under fire for spreading outlandish conspiracy theories regarding the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Although he later attempted to distance himself from those views, his initial endorsement of such claims raises questions about his ability to critically evaluate information.

Additionally, Bowman’s guilty plea for falsely pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon Office Building in Washington, D.C., further tarnishes his reputation. Though he paid a $1,000 fine, he denied any intention to disrupt congressional proceedings, leaving lingering doubts about his commitment to upholding the democratic process.

With these controversies surrounding Rep. Jamaal Bowman, his constituents are left questioning his judgment, values, and fitness to represent the interests of their communities. As the importance of upholding law and order remains paramount, it is crucial to hold elected officials accountable for their actions and the values they espouse.
