In a shocking turn of events, the whistleblower who publicly raised doubts about Boeing’s production standards has been found dead. According to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, John Barnett, 62, passed away from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday. Barnett had recently undergone cross-examination by both Boeing’s lawyers and his own attorney just days before his tragic demise.
The court had scheduled Barnett to provide further testimony on Saturday, but he failed to appear as planned. Later, he was discovered deceased in his truck, which had been parked in a hotel parking garage, as reported by the BBC.

Barnett had dedicated over three decades of his career to Boeing before retiring in 2017. Throughout his employment, he served as a quality control engineer for the company. In 2019, he openly voiced concerns to the BBC about Boeing’s manufacturing practices, alleging that the rush to complete production on the 787 Dreamliner jets had compromised safety.
One of Barnett’s shocking claims was that the emergency oxygen systems designed for the 787 Dreamliners had a failure rate of 25%. This meant that a significant portion of these aircraft had the potential to rapidly lose oxygen in the event of sudden cabin decompression, endangering the lives of passengers.

According to Barnett, these issues came to his attention after he began working at Boeing’s North Charleston plant in 2010. It was reported that he repeatedly raised his concerns with management but saw no meaningful action taken to address them.
In 2017, the Federal Aviation Administration conducted a review of Boeing and subsequently issued orders for the company to address certain issues, which lent credibility to some of Barnett’s allegations.
Boeing expressed its sadness in the wake of Barnett’s passing, releasing a statement to FOX Business that read, “We are saddened by Mr. Barnett’s passing, and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
South Carolina authorities have initiated an active investigation into this tragic incident. As the story unfolds, the aerospace industry braces for further scrutiny and introspection regarding safety protocols and the treatment of whistleblowers.
