ROCKFORD, Ill. – Shock and horror spread through Rockford, Illinois, as authorities announced that four individuals tragically lost their lives, and seven others were injured during a stabbing rampage that spanned multiple locations on Wednesday. The suspect, a 22-year-old man, is currently in police custody and is undergoing questioning, according to Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd. One of the wounded victims remains in critical condition.

Expressing her condolences, Chief Redd stated, “My heart goes out to the families right now that are suffering a loss.” The police department received a medical call at 1:14 p.m. and subsequently received additional calls for assistance from both police and paramedics.

Chief Redd assured the public that there are no other suspects believed to be on the run or at large at this time. However, the motive behind the heinous crime remains unclear, leaving authorities searching for answers.

Contrary to initial reports, not all victims sustained stab wounds, and none were shot, Chief Redd confirmed. The police initially reported five injured individuals, but later, Cori Hilliard, a public information officer with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, informed the Associated Press that two additional victims were among those hurt.

Of the victims, three were pronounced dead at the scenes, while the fourth passed away at a local hospital. While their identities have not been disclosed, the victims have been identified as a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man.

Chief Redd urged residents in the area to review any footage captured by their home surveillance cameras that might be relevant to the attacks.

Rockford, with a population of approximately 150,000, is located 90 miles northwest of Chicago. This latest act of violence comes just days after a tragic stabbing inside a Walmart in Rockford, resulting in the death of a teenage employee.

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara expressed shock and grief, stating, “Today, we are shocked by another horrific act of violence against innocent members of our community.” With the suspect now apprehended, Mayor McNamara emphasized the importance of supporting the impacted community members through their healing and recovery. Efforts to prevent similar incidents will require collaboration across multiple jurisdictions, the mayor added on the city’s Facebook page.

According to Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana, the suspect was apprehended by a sheriff’s deputy in response to a reported home invasion. Caruana recounted how a brave survivor, a young lady who suffered stab wounds to her hands and face, managed to escape, while a good Samaritan who came to her aid also sustained injuries.

The shock and disbelief felt by residents were palpable. Eric Patterson, a Rockford resident, struggled to comprehend the violence that unfolded on his street, comparing it to a senseless video game. “You can’t rationalize this,” he lamented. “It’s almost like playing a video game, but it’s reality. It makes no sense.”

Vanessa Hy, another resident, described the scene of the suspect’s arrest as unreal, resembling a movie. “All of a sudden, we heard police run up on both sides of the house screaming ‘Stop! Get down!'” Hy said in an interview with WREX-TV. She continued, “Then they ran into the backyard, and after a few minutes, we saw them bringing the suspect down the driveway in handcuffs, and he was very bloody.”

The harrowing events have shaken the community, as Cassandra Hernandez, a neighbor, reflected on the unexpected tragedy. “You never expect this here,” she shared. “We have such great neighbors.” Authorities are determined to investigate the crime thoroughly to prevent any such incidents from recurring.
