Washington, DC – In the early hours of Sunday morning, two individuals were tragically shot dead, and five others were left wounded in a shooting incident that occurred in Democrat-controlled Washington, DC. The perpetrator remains unidentified and at large, according to the police.

The shooting took place at around 3 a.m. at the intersection of 7th Street NW and P Street NW, just four blocks away from Mt. Vernon Square near the Kennedy Recreation Center. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect fleeing the scene on foot.

During a news conference held on Sunday morning, Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carrol urged anyone with information regarding the incident or who may have witnessed it to contact the Metropolitan Police Department.

Law enforcement officials described the suspect as a black man with an average build, wearing light pants and a blue shirt. The suspect was reportedly last seen heading southbound on 7th Street NW. Authorities advised the public not to take any action but instead to immediately call 911 if they have any information.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered six adults who had all sustained gunshot wounds. Tragically, two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a seventh victim had the resilience to get to a hospital on his own, according to the police.

The deceased victims have since been identified as 32-year-old Anthony Brown from Southeast, D.C., and 32-year-old Jay Lucks from Baltimore, Maryland.

While the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, the Metropolitan Police Department stated in a press release that initial findings suggest “that one or more suspects intentionally discharged a firearm at the victims.”

In an effort to bring the perpetrators to justice, the police department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 per victim, totaling $50,000, for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Out of respect for the victims’ families, the identities of the other victims are being withheld until their next of kin have been notified.

This incident occurred against the backdrop of a concerning rise in homicides in Washington, DC. According to crime statistics released by the police department, there has been a 35 percent increase in homicides this year compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 274 homicides in all of 2023 ─ a significant jump from 2022.

Furthermore, a recent survey has labeled Washington, DC as the least desirable place to live due to its high crime rate and cost of living.
