CHICAGO — Tragedy struck the city’s southwest side as a Chicago police officer was shot and killed while on his way home from work. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Luis M. Huesca, was heading home and still in uniform but wearing a customary cover-up when he was shot multiple times in the early hours of Sunday. He was later pronounced dead at a Chicago hospital.

Authorities have not yet provided a motive for the incident, and police have not disclosed whether the attack was part of a carjacking, although the officer’s vehicle was taken. There is currently no suspect in custody.

Huesca was a six-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, just two days shy of his 31st birthday. Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed sorrow over the police officer’s killing and the city’s continuing violent crime problem.

The Chicago Police Department said officers reacted to a gunshot alert before 3 a.m. on Sunday and found Huesca with multiple gunshot wounds. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office identified the slain officer and offered condolences to the grieving Huesca family.

“No family or community should ever have to suffer such pain,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our city is grieving, and our condolences go out to their entire family as well as Luis’ fellow officers and community.”
