A distress call from a mother alleging an attack by her adult son prompted the officers to the scene just after 3 p.m. Amidst the chaos, neighbor Nova Fuller shared insights into the intense exchange, recalling the son’s defiant proclamation: “Remember what you said to me yesterday? I am not going back to jail!”

As the officers intervened, they identified the suspect as Melvin Butler, 39, and proceeded to inform him of his impending arrest. However, Butler adamantly resisted their commands to comply, triggering a turbulent struggle. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny shed light on the ensuing scuffle, noting that body-worn camera footage captured the chaotic tussle between Butler and the officers, culminating in a distressing revelation. “And then you hear an officer state, ‘He has my gun,’ and then shots are fired,” Chief Kenny disclosed.

The confrontation took a dire turn as both officers sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation. One officer endured a shot to the left hand, while the other suffered an injury to the left thigh. In response to the threat, at least one of the officers discharged their weapon, striking Butler in the stomach and leg.
