During a press briefing on Monday, Warren police presented the video, which captured the suspect, armed with a 9 mm Glock pistol, running out of a garage and brandishing his weapon at officers before they opened fire. In an effort to respect the privacy of the suspect’s family, authorities have chosen not to disclose his name, according to Lt. John Gajewski. The suspect, an 18-year-old high school student, was attending online classes at the time.

Officials have revealed that the suspect was believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Investigators confirmed he had no significant criminal record apart from a few traffic incidents and purchased the firearm legally from a private individual.

The released footage shows an officer initially entering the open garage but quickly retreating to his cruiser upon encountering the armed suspect. The officer urgently reported “Gun gun gun” over the radio from the safety of his vehicle.

In response to the imminent threat, two officers fired a total of eleven shots, three of which struck the suspect. Notably, the suspect did not discharge his weapon towards the officers.

Rushton commended the prompt actions of the officers, noting that once the suspect was on the ground, they immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR. The officers successfully revived the suspect three times before Warren Fire personnel arrived at the scene within three minutes. Rushton emphasized the brevity of the encounter, stating, “The entire incident, from the moment the suspect was first seen with a firearm to the volley of gunshots from the officers, lasted approximately seven seconds.”

During the press briefing, recordings of the 911 dispatch were played, revealing a family member’s distress call indicating that the suspect was exhibiting erratic behavior and assaulting individuals within the household. The caller also expressed concerns about the suspect’s extended period of sleep deprivation, estimated at four to five days.

As the investigation into this tragic event continues, the Warren community grapples with the aftermath and seeks answers surrounding the circumstances that led to this unfortunate loss of life.
