SALINA, NY – A solemn atmosphere enveloped Salina on Sunday evening as news broke of the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of a police officer and a sheriff’s deputy. The incident unfolded in the quiet town, sending shockwaves through the community and beyond.

According to Onondaga County Sheriff Tobias Shelley, the fallen heroes included a deputy from his department and a police officer from Syracuse, whose identities are being withheld at this time, as reported by WSYR-TV.

The devastating chain of events began around 7:07 p.m. when Syracuse police officers noticed a “suspicious vehicle” in the vicinity of Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street. Attempting to conduct a routine stop, the officers encountered resistance, and the driver evaded apprehension and fled the scene.

Although the officers momentarily lost sight of the fleeing vehicle, they were able to capture its license plate. Further investigation revealed the owner’s address in Salina, prompting officers, accompanied by Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputies, to the residence on Darien Drive.

Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile shed light on the unfolding events, stating, “They asked for assistance from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office because they learned additional information the individual driving the vehicle might be armed. Officers from the city and county arrived at the residence on Darien Drive about the same time.”

Upon reaching the scene, the officers and deputies were faced with an armed individual, leading to a harrowing exchange of gunfire.

Cecile explained, “While they were inspecting the vehicle and saw what appeared to be guns inside, they heard what sounded like someone manipulating a firearm from inside the residence. Moments later, there was an exchange of gunfire between at least one suspect and the officers and deputies.”

Tragically, one officer, one deputy, and the armed suspect sustained gunshot wounds and were swiftly transported to Upstate University Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, all three succumbed to their injuries, leaving their families and the community grieving.

In a heartfelt statement, the sheriff’s office expressed their condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, as well as with their brothers and sisters in law enforcement who are suffering in the wake of this tragedy.”

As the investigation unfolds, the sheriff’s office is awaiting a warrant to thoroughly search the residence, diligently working towards uncovering the facts surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
