A shooting incident at an apartment in West Mobile is under scrutiny as the Mobile Police Department leans towards labeling it a case of self-defense. The incident, which occurred at the Ashford Place Apartments, saw a group of men engaged in suspicious activities before a fatal shooting took place.
Linda Hyatt, a resident of the area, reported observing a group of unidentified men loitering around the complex at approximately 1:21 p.m. on Tuesday. She recalled seeing five men, with one of them being pushed in a wheelchair, heading towards one of the apartments. Shortly after, she heard three loud bangs emanating from the same apartment where the men had gathered.

Tragically, the encounter resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities.
According to Mobile Police, the group of men was allegedly attempting to break into the apartment when the resident inside resorted to self-defense measures, resulting in the fatal outcome.
Acknowledging the sensitive nature of the incident, Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood commented on the circumstance, highlighting Alabama’s provision for citizens to defend themselves and others under the “Stand Your Ground” law when they perceive a threat.

In this case, Blackwood clarified that the “stand-your-ground” law applies, leading to the decision not to press charges against the resident involved in the shooting.
In the aftermath of the incident, authorities have made one arrest in connection to the burglary. Okoye Day, 22, was apprehended and is facing charges of burglary and firearm possession. The District Attorney’s office is also evaluating the case for any further charges.
