The Springdale Police Department received multiple calls reporting a man damaging vehicles and making threats in a residential area. Upon arriving at the scene, Cpl. Wright encountered Calvert, who was standing in the roadway brandishing a knife and a table leg.
According to the police department’s release, Calvert seized a bystander and held a knife to their throat during the encounter. In response, Wright made the decision to use lethal force, shooting Calvert to protect the hostage. Calvert was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Video footage from the dashcam reveals Calvert gripping a knife and seizing a man while an officer repeatedly instructs him to drop the weapon. In the bodycam video, Wright can be heard warning Calvert, “I’m going to shoot you,” seconds before firing his weapon.
