House Speaker Mike Johnson met with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday to discuss new efforts for the upcoming 2024 election. At a press conference, Johnson unveiled legislation aimed at ensuring election integrity to safeguard the democratic process for American voters. The proposed bill would require all voters to prove their American citizenship before participating in federal elections, Johnson announced. The speaker emphasized that the legislation would establish new safeguards, putting America on par with other democratic nations worldwide that also prohibit non-citizen voting. The bill would also require states to remove non-citizens from the voter rolls.

Election integrity is a crucial issue that has been gaining attention from Republican lawmakers, particularly those who support the former president. Several battleground states are still expected to implement the same election procedures as that prompted Trump supporters’ outrage during the 2020 election. The GOP has filed 78 lawsuits across the US in 23 states to secure election integrity, according to a previous Daily Caller report.

Speaking with Donald Trump, Johnson stated that during his travels across the country, the American people continually express their concern about the need for election integrity measures. The House Speaker declared that House Republicans would act to ensure fair and free elections. Johnson emphasized that having fair and free elections was critical to the nation’s stability and highlighted that the legislation was for the people’s benefit.

CNN sources revealed that the meeting between Johnson and Trump was Johnson’s idea. The senior advisor to the former president informed CNN that Johnson and Trump would deliberate on state proposals and lawsuits that would allow non-citizens to vote.

To emphasize the legislation’s significance, Trump stated that he would push to close America’s border, citing the influx of millions of people and the reporting that goes unmentioned.

The proposed legislation is a significant step towards ensuring the democratic integrity of the US electoral process during the upcoming 2024 election.
