Albany, New York – An officer-involved shooting in Albany has left Chief Eric Hawkins describing it as an “ambush.” The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. near the College of Saint Rose, in the vicinity of North Main Avenue and Western Avenue.

According to authorities, the officer was conducting a routine traffic stop when he was suddenly shot by the suspect. In an exchange of gunfire, the suspect was fatally wounded.

Initial reports indicate that the officer had attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding but was unsuccessful. Dash camera footage captured the ensuing chase between the officer and the suspect.

Shortly afterwards, the officer spotted the parked car and made another attempt to approach the driver. However, as he approached the vehicle, he was ambushed from behind. Mayor Kathy Sheehan characterized the incident as an “act of depraved gun violence,” as if the gun had magically committed the crime without any help from the violent criminal.

Defense attorney and Albany DA candidate Lee Kindlon also shared his thoughts on the incident, emphasizing the need to address the influx of firearms into Albany to enhance community safety as opposed to addressing the societal issues that lead someone to a life a violent crime.

Body camera footage obtained from the scene shows the moment when the officer exited his vehicle to conduct the traffic stop and was immediately fired upon. In the video, the officer can be heard radioing for backup after shots were fired.
