Bronx, New York – A horrifying incident unfolded on Tuesday night as two masked gunmen, riding on separate scooters, opened fire on a street in the Bronx. The shooting resulted in the death of a 29-year-old man and left three others injured, according to authorities.

The gunmen, who were equipped with hoodies and masks, targeted a group of men near the intersection of East Mount Eden Avenue and Townsend Avenue at around 6:15 p.m., revealed Assistant NYPD Chief Benjamin Gurley during a press conference held at the crime scene.

The victim, tragically struck in the chest and leg, was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Gurley confirmed. The three wounded victims, aged 37, 31, and 23, all sustained gunshot wounds to their legs, as reported by law enforcement sources.

The perpetrators quickly fled the scene on their scooters following the attack. While one person has been taken into custody, their direct connection to the shooting remains unclear, police stated.

Detectives are currently investigating whether there are any gang-related motives behind the incident. An NYPD spokesperson commented, “It seems that way, but not sure,” during the briefing.

Daughtry further disclosed that since the beginning of this year, a total of 9,500 scooters, dirt bikes, and ATVs have been taken off the streets, including 2,500 in the Bronx alone. The NYPD has made approximately 1,300 arrests related to individuals operating illegal two-wheelers, encompassing a range of charges, he added.

Assistant Chief Gurley emphasized the need for accountability within the criminal justice system, mentioning the collaboration with the District Attorney’s office in achieving effective outcomes. “That’s when we get the bang for our buck,” he stated.

Local Bronx residents expressed their support for the crackdown on illegal scooters. Al Morillo, a resident near the crime scene, called for a comprehensive approach, saying, “They have to grab everybody from their scooter. No matter who it is making deliveries or whatever, they have to grab everybody from the scooters. You have to have a driver’s license or something.”

As fear loomed over the community, Jean Rosario, another resident in the vicinity, shared the distressing experience his wife had encountered. Hearing the gunshots and witnessing a bleeding victim prompted his wife to call him in tears. Reflecting on the incident, Rosario expressed his concerns, “The thing is that you never know because when they shoot, open fire, bullets have no eyes. It could be anybody, you know. It could go to me, or any kids, or somebody that’s crossing the street.”

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting, striving to bring justice to the victims and restore a sense of security to the Bronx community.
