Authorities confirmed that Tucson officers, armed with sufficient evidence, were attempting to apprehend Mendivil on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

It was reported that Mendivil sought refuge in a residence near Dodge Boulevard and Fort Lowell Road upon realizing the presence of law enforcement. Despite numerous attempts to establish contact over the course of several hours, Mendivil refused to engage.

With the residence evacuated, law enforcement obtained a search warrant as hostage negotiators were deployed in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation.

According to official investigators, Tucson police policy allows for officers to discharge their firearms in a known safe and unoccupied area as a tactic to disrupt the suspect’s behavior, exclusively authorized for SWAT members with specialized training and in extreme circumstances. Employing this strategy, the SWAT team returned fire, retreated, and utilized nonlethal options.

Persisting in his relentless attack, Mendivil continued his sustained bursts of shooting as law enforcement deployed nonlethal equipment.

The escalating situation forced Tucson police to call for assistance from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety in an effort to resolve the standoff. In order to protect the public, the Sheriff’s Department evacuated a nearby park threatened by the ongoing gunfire.

After hours of failed negotiations and relentless gunfire from Mendivil, SWAT teams ultimately breached the exterior wall of the residence, only to find Mendivil holding an AR-15 style rifle and a handgun, pointed towards his own head as a final attempt at negotiation.

Mendivil managed to take his own life before law enforcement could detain him. He was immediately transported to Banner University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to authorities.

In a small silver lining, no members of law enforcement or individuals from the community were harmed during this protracted standoff.

This harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their tireless efforts to ensure public safety, and highlights the urgent need for continued support and resources for these brave men and women who face such life-threatening situations on a daily basis.
