U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott revealed that several task force officers had visited Smith’s residence on W. 21st Street in Lorain on April 18 to execute a federal arrest warrant. When they attempted to take Smith into custody in an upstairs bedroom, he assaulted the officers with a wooden table leg and stabbed one of them three times in the neck with a knife.

Describing the situation, U.S. Marshal Elliott indicated that Smith was wielding the knife in one hand and the table leg in the other as he continued to attack the task force officers, even after being tased twice.

In response to the ongoing assault, one of the task force officers discharged his firearm, resulting in the fatal injury of Smith. Following the incident, three task force officers were transported to Mercy Hospital for treatment of their injuries, with two of them reported to be seriously wounded.
