In a recent revelation, it has come to light that Democrat FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan has ties to a Marxist organization called the Law and Political Economy (LPE) Project. The LPE Project has actively supported the pro-Palestinian protesters involved in the encampment at Columbia University.

Khan, currently serving as the chairwoman for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), also holds the position of associate professor of law at Columbia University. Although she is currently on leave from the university, while serving in her present role, she has reportedly assisted Amy Kapczynski, a faculty co-director with the LPE Project and a professor at Yale University, in designing her first LPE seminar.

The goals of the LPE movement were outlined by Kapczynski in the Yale Law Report journal from the summer of 2023. According to her, the LPE aims to develop new intellectual theories and proposals that promote equality and democracy. The movement has gained significant recognition, with peer-reviewed publications and conferences dedicated to LPE ideas. Notably, Lina Khan, who leads the Federal Trade Commission and was part of the student group at Yale that helped design the first LPE seminar, has emerged as a prominent LPE scholar.

It is important to note that Kapczynski has openly acknowledged her admiration for various critical theories, including those from the Frankfurt School, queer theory, post-colonial theory, psychoanalytic theory, and Marxist feminist thought. The Frankfurt School, known for its application of Marxism to society and philosophy, is a key influence on critical theory.

The initial anti-Israel encampment at Columbia University, which commenced on April 17, resulted in the suspension of several students and the subsequent arrest of hundreds of protesters. While the university took steps to remove the encampment, another one was established shortly afterward, leading to the New York Police Department (NYPD) conducting a raid to regain control of Hamilton Hall, an academic building on campus.

6 Must Know Tips About The Aftermath of Self Defense

In the aftermath, similar anti-Israel protests and encampments have sprung up on other college and university campuses in support of the one at Columbia University.

Kapczynski shared a post from the LPE Project in which law students from various universities, including Yale and NYU, expressed their thoughts on the anti-Israel protests and encampments. Corrine Blalock, the Executive Director of the LPE Project, also lauded the involvement of students from Columbia University, CUNY, Yale, and NYU in the encampments.

This is not the first instance of Khan’s association with the LPE Project. In July 2022, Khan and FTC Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter participated in an event hosted by the LPE Project, discussing “anti-racist antitrust” and the FTC’s role in shaping markets and economic outcomes.

Most recently, during an event organized by the LPE Project, Khan expressed her admiration for Kapczynski’s leadership in the LPE movement, highlighting her profound influence and inspiration on her own journey.

These connections and associations have raised concerns in some circles about Khan’s ideological leanings and the potential impacts on her decisions as the FTC chairwoman. Critics argue that her alignment with the LPE Project, which supports pro-Palestinian protesters and subscribes to Marxist-influenced theories, could introduce bias into her role as the chief regulator of U.S. markets.

As the debate unfolds, it remains to be seen how Khan’s connections to the LPE Project will impact her approach to regulatory matters and the fairness of her decision-making process within the FTC.
