The Los Angeles Police Department stood their ground at USC early on Sunday morning to clear protesters from their encampment. Dozens of riot gear-equipped officers were present, along with the fire department. Last month, the police arrested 93 people on suspicion of trespassing as they cleared another encampment in the center of the campus. However, protesters reestablished the campsite the previous week. President Carol Folt wrote in a letter, published Friday, that the university is obligated to uphold free movement and to protect against harassment. Student organizers say the number of tents and people has grown to 40 and 50, respectively. Despite this, there is currently a low police presence at the park, except for campus safety officers.

Nancy Alonzo, assistant director of the USC Village Residential Colleges, reportedly visited the outskirts of the camp on Saturday afternoon and read a letter, indicating the encampment and associated acts were unacceptable. Alonzo restricted students from taking photos or receiving physical copies, but students reported being provided with an alternative free speech area. However, the student coalition said they are not interested in moving to the designated area as they feel that locations cannot be dictated by those in power. Encampment spokespersons state that no matter how the occupation goes down, it remains a win as they have caused discomfort for USC administration.

The decision to clear the camp on April 24 destabilized USC, coming after barring valedictorian Asna Tabassum from speaking at its commencement for unspecified safety threats. USC canceled commencement altogether. Ultimately, USC announced a Trojan Family graduation event at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a promise of fireworks, surprise performances, and the Trojan Marching Band.

The University of Southern California is only one of the latest to take measures against the encampment. The LAPD arrested 25 people at Cal Poly Humboldt, and there have been clashes between police and protesters at QCLA. The protest also caused criticism over the university’s handling of the incident.
