In an unfortunate incident on Thursday afternoon, Pasco deputies in Hudson, Florida, shot a woman who threatened them with a knife. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the case, which unfolded near Denton Avenue and Dane Lane, according to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.

The encounter began around 3:30 p.m. when Isabella North, 29, flagged down a passerby and expressed a desperate need for assistance. Concerned, the passerby dialed 911 and connected North with the dispatcher, relaying her alarming statements. North admitted to feeling a strong urge to harm someone based on her diagnosed clinical insanity. She further disclosed that she was in possession of a knife.

Sheriff Nocco emphasized the severity of the situation, describing North as both armed and homicidal. Upon the deputies’ arrival, they attempted to engage in conversation with North. However, in a matter of seconds, she retrieved a 12-inch knife from her waistband, raising it menacingly above her head.

Body-worn camera footage, later released by the sheriff’s office, captured the rapid sequence of events. The video begins with a deputy addressing North by her first name, genuinely asking about her well-being. North’s response remains inaudible. The deputy inquires further, seeking clarity on the situation. Meanwhile, North brandishes the knife she had concealed.

Remaining calm, the deputy requests that North simply drop the weapon. Yet, to the deputies’ dismay, she raises the knife higher, assuming a defensive posture.

“Please don’t do that. Put that down,” the deputy pleads, drawing his firearm.

Both deputies continue to urge North to drop the knife, but she persists in approaching them with increasing speed. Faced with this imminent threat, each deputy fires a single shot, and North collapses to the ground.

North was swiftly transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Sheriff Nocco confirmed that none of the deputies sustained injuries during the incident.

Expressing his regret, Nocco acknowledged the deputies’ training in de-escalation techniques. However, in this particular case, North did not allow for any dialogue or attempts to defuse the situation.

The sheriff’s office has withheld the identities of the deputies involved but disclosed that they have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Having reviewed the body-worn camera footage and listened to the 911 call, Sheriff Nocco expressed confidence in the deputies’ actions. He commended their swift response, emphasizing that they effectively prevented a potentially tragic outcome.

“This is a very sad situation,” Nocco said. “Given the circumstances, those deputies did what they had to do to prevent a homicide.”
