Newly released video footage from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office has shed light on the events leading up to a fatal shooting in Rio Linda on March 23. The incident unfolded along the 6500 block of Campanile Street, where 38-year-old Christopher Gilmore lost his life.

According to reports, family members had called the deputies, informing them that Gilmore was self-harming in a bathroom and was armed with a knife. However, the family later claimed that the weapon was actually a shaving razor.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies engaged with the family and attempted to coax Gilmore out of the house, but he refused to comply. One of Gilmore’s roommates revealed that he had expressed a desire for “suicide by cop,” suggesting a troubling state of mind.

Dispatch audio recordings, made public by the sheriff’s office, revealed that Gilmore suffered from schizophrenia and harbored a belief that everyone was against him. Furthermore, it was discovered that Gilmore had been arrested six days earlier and released pending trial on his own recognizance.

The recently released video depicts the deputies’ unsuccessful attempts to persuade Gilmore to leave the premises and sheds light on whether he had made any remarks regarding his intention to die that day.

Shortly thereafter, Gilmore emerged from the garage holding what authorities described as a knife. Deputies repeatedly commanded him to drop the weapon and surrender peacefully, urging him to come out with empty hands.

However, Gilmore ignored their orders and advanced toward the deputies. In an effort to stop him, one deputy discharged multiple less-lethal shotgun rounds, but unfortunately, they had no effect on him.

According to a news release by the sheriff’s office, despite being hit by several less-lethal rounds and given multiple warnings to halt, Gilmore continued to approach a deputy while holding the knife, prompting the deputy to use his service weapon and shoot him.

Gilmore was struck six times by the less-lethal rounds and three times by the gunshots. Although deputies administered first aid, Gilmore succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Authorities revealed that the knife Gilmore wielded measured approximately six inches in length, with a 3 1/2 inch blade.

The involved deputy has been a member of the sheriff’s office since 2019.

Gilmore’s family maintains that he suffered from mental illness and was in a state of distress but posed no threat to the deputies. Bobbie Gilmore, his sister, expressed frustration, stating that her brother needed help during his mental health crisis, not gunfire.

This latest incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with individuals suffering from mental health issues, bringing into focus the need for improved crisis intervention tactics and support for those in need.
